SLK/R171: Auto A/C and Top Up/Top Down - Function seems backwards?

Auto A/C and Top Up/Top Down - Function seems backwards?
Is it just me (or my car), but the "programming" for the Auto A/C seems backwards when sensing top up vs down... let me explain
It hot here now (90+F). Car in full sunshine, Auto A/C temp on 70F. Top up the fan is blowing on highest, as soon as I start putting the top down (actually exactly at the point where the top unlatches from the windshield) the fan drops to a much lower setting.
In my other convertible with Auto A/C the fan speed would kick up under the same conditions.
Full sun and 20+F degrees difference between requested temp and outside, shouldn't the A/C go to highest?
I've tried this multiple times in different scenarios. Always the same.
Does everyone else's work this way?
If so, can anyone guess on why the "programing" would be like this?

Yes, but I'm not trying to A/C the whole world, the compressor is running anyway, I just want the fan to push the cold air to me, instead of being lost in the ****pit swirl with the top down (i.e. higher fan speed, NOT lower).
Hmmm, ok the forum policer doesn't let me use the word for where you sit inside a driving/flying machine (i.e. c*ckpit).
