ESP mulfunction warning, please help

Hi guys,

My SLK 350 has done less than 1800 km and tonight as I was just pulling out of
the drive way, I got a "mulfunction message" saying that the ESP is
mulfunctioning and it is not activated. I turned off the engine for a minute and
restarted the car, the mulfunction message appeared again. Then I turned the
car off again and waited a couple of minutes more, then restarted the car again,
and the message went away. So, I took the car out for a short drive, then after
a few more minutes, the mulfunction message appeared again!!

I've got no idea what's gone wrong. I haven't done ANYTHING unusual at all.

I somehow seem to remember that other people on this forum has also had the
same problem. Would you guys mind telling what the cause was and how it
was fixed?

I'm going to see the dealship tomorrow.

Thanks a lot.

didu, I had the same problem. Nothing to worry about, it's covered under your warranty and all it took was about 1/2 day to fix. So far, I've had my ABS and ESP light come on, but no problems other than that. I believe it was caused by a faulty sensor.

i have the same problem, but i have not fixed yet...

but what i did realize is that sometimes the error comes on upon starting the car, and sometimes, after driving for a few mins

the interesting thing is, when it does not come up immediately upon starting the car up, I can press the ESP button. The ESP light will come on, but the malfunction message doesn come on until I turn on (button depressed) the ESP.

seems like a (hopefully) simple electrical problem. didnt bother to fix it since i have so little time to drive the car on vacations and i cant afford to have it in the shop for even one day!

Thanks for the info guys! I'm having the car checked out on Friday, hopefully it's
just a fault sensor. I just cannot help feeling annoyed that a car at this price
range would have faults like these.

I think the ESP is a rather important safety feature of the car, so I think we should
have it fixed. Anyway, thanks a lot guys.

Yeah, Its gonna be a steering postion sensor thats the likely candidate for this fault.
Don;t worry about it, all things can have problems and its not linked to price necessarily. How many times have you had a technical fault with an aircraft that has caused you a delay ? Look how much they cost !!

You bet your boot lid it is! Although I really enjoy how ESP-II lets you have a little more fun, like being able to squeal the tires from a start or push out the tail in a turn, it's saved my tail on at least one occasion. Had our first real rainy day in our area, and I caught some slippery stuff on a freeway onramp (even only going about 35!) and felt the back end slip out and straighten right up again. Made me feel sad about a couple of older Benzes that ate dust in accidents during the same period. May we have a moment of silence, please?

Yeah, I did a MB advanced driving course and the instructor told us that with the
ESP techonolgy that comes with every single MB car, it is physically impossible
to spin the car for more than 180 degrees, provided that there is no external
forces.

That's why I want my ESP back!!!

Er... I think you have to ask your dealership. Mine in Australia would give every
new MB owner a free 1 day advanced driving course which would cost other
people a few hundred AU$s, and for each new AMG owner, my dealership would
give a free AMG racing/advanced driving day.

Smythe European here in San Jose, California used to do that as well. I got a chance to do the dynamics course with my W208. But with my recent R171, no such course was offered. I guess that Autonation, who took over the dealership some years ago, isn't quite as interested in making sure people get the best experience of the cars they sell. *shrug*

Ok, the car has been fixed, according to the dealership, a little sensor that
sits behind the steering wheel was broken and they happened to have a spare
part, so they just replaced it.

I took the car out for a drive, so far so good.

I don´t agree with Geordy UK, because i had the same problem as Didu and my dealer change the steering position sensor and this fault is again. Thanks

I think there are quite a few ESP sensors, the one(s) malfunctioning in your
car might not be the one just behind the steering wheel.

I think there are around 6 sensors invoolved in this, not just the one. However, the car is under warranty, so whats the problemo ?

KNEE JERK..... Dude first off you need to read about your car. If you did you would find that even with it off the car compensates with other features and you will be hard pressed to kill yourself even with it off. Next its a Sensor and most likely the ESP would still work but the sensor "thinks" it wont.

if your ESP goes out, take advantage of it and floor the car in an empty area...the car feels a lot more powerful off the line. of course, you can go through the menu and put it in "dyno mode" for 100% esp off...but it's easiest when ESP is plain broken

I haven't felt the need for that sort of fun. I've found this car immensely more tossable than my old W208 w/o even causing ESP to step in. Very pleased. Naturally, YMMV.
