Model Year difference in Premium Package

We had a 2005 SLK350 with the Premium Package which included the Memory Power Seat option. With each car key, we were able to program the driver's seat, both outside mirrors, and telescope/tilt of the steering wheel. Upon removing the key from the ignition, the seat would return to its furthest track and the steering wheel would tilt UP to its maximum point.

We now have a 2006 SLK55 with the Premium Package and Memory Power Seats. However, the seats' memory works only with the memory button at the base of the seat, not with the key.

Can any other owners with Premium/Memory state what model year SLK they own and how the option works with their car? I'd like to find out if there is an issue with the car if it was a change in the model years.

I do know that the Premium Packages differ among models, and among model years.... On the SLK specifically? Haven't paid attention to it.

My 2006 SLK55 only lifts the steering wheel when I turn off the car. The seat never moves. The seat does not move with the key.

From other posts on the subject, I gathered that this change was due to the fact that people got confused regarding the behavior of the seats and keys in various combinations. I guess the concept of always using the same key was difficult for them. So, the feature got dropped...

The seats are the comfort package, but it did change.
In my '06 350, the seat does not move, but the steering wheel does.
The memory key thing seems to be gone as well.

On a seperate uncertainty, I have the premium sound and the volume does not seem to change with speed or noise or top up or down. The setting indicates it should change with ambient sound, but I cannot detect it. Does anyone else know?

Are you absolutely certain it is gone in the 2006? There is a setting in the setup windows (those ones you have to scroll through with the steering wheel buttons. I believe it is in the convenience set), where you can tell the car to pay attention to the key specific settings or not.

Perhaps your 2005 had it turned on, and it just happens that on your 2006 it is turned off.

If you already knew this, and had checked for that, then my apologies. But I thought it would be worth a try.

Oh, yes, it's definitely changed. In the first two images (pages 142-143 of the 2005 owners manual) you will see references to the movement of both the seat and steering wheel. In fact, there was even a selection to choose whether the steering wheel, seat, or both would move automatically. The last image (page 148 from the 2006 version) indicates only an on or off setting, and only that the steering wheel will move. Period.

Thanks

First - sorry to all about the Premium vs. Comfort Package. Sh*t happens

It's a shame that they had to remove this feature. One thing that was really nice in the SLK350 was the fact that after my 'short legged' wife got out of the car, the seat returned to its furthest point on the track. It definitely made it easier for me to get in the car when she allowed me to drive it. Now with the SLK55, I have to tuck in my knees when I get in after she's been driving.

c'est la vie

Well, you could do something nicer for your knees and just hold down one of the memory buttons on the seat to adjust it before coming in for a landing....

It's hard to teach an OLD dog new tricks, but I'm learning. I only forgot to move the seat once this week so far.

I have a 2005 350 and really like the seat moving back on entry/exit. The SLK is not the easiest car to get in and out of (and still look cool) and the moving seat makes it easier to get in and out period. I would really miss this feature if I had it taken away from me. I think maybe the reason that it was dropped is to keep the seat from hitting the back wall when going back for taller drivers.

Red face

Yeah - I bought a 06 SLK and while the salesman told me about Key Dependancy and Easy Exit, I swiftly found out that they were both chopped from the 06 versions.

The service guys said that key dependancy was removed in an overall attempt to reduce complexity with the electronics - it seems the early model 05's had many issues with their electronics. The option just doesn't exist in the config menu.

The Easy Exit feature still exists, but it's been watered down to only move the Steering Wheel out of your way when you exit/enter. The seat's don't pull back any more - and that's tied to warranty issues it caused in early 05's. Specific seat settings would cause the back of the seat scuffing the backwall when using the preset seat movement logic causing damage.

Pity. I was kicked about both of these features, and was bummed when I brought in my car to Service, and had them write my issues off as "by design"

It would seem an easy enhancement to partially make up for the seat move function removal, would be to have the Memory recall buttons be one push (like many/most other car makes), instead of push and hold.

True. I'm guessing they used the same logic they used to make the vario roof push and hold too - so that you're engaged through the process and know if it didn't finish. But from user experience... doh!

You miss the logic in the change. It saves M/B 25 cents per car.
