Tire pressure monitoring

With all this talk about changing wheels and the great pictures that have been posted, I have a question. My wife's SLK has the TPMS and stock 17" wheels. I want to upgrade to AMG 18" but I wondered what effect it would have on the TMPS. Does anyone know what kind of system the SLK TMPS is? (rim mounted vs valve stem). How difficult is it to retain the system if you completely change the wheels?

Thanks

If yours is the same as mine (2005 SLK, Euro Delivery in April '05), then it does not actually measure tire pressure. It measures differences in wheel rotation speed on the theory that when a tire loses pressure, it loses total diameter, and then spins faster to acheive the same speed. When you change the tires, you are supposed to reset the warning system so that it knows you have a new baseline. I suspect that changing to 18" wheels in that case would just mean resetting the system when you do so.

Thanks a bunch!
It's a J-spec which I think is just a European model with all of the options bundled together... easier for importing.

Is the reset in one of the buried menus on the computer options?

I don't know about the European spec version, but on mine it is in the "Standard" display group, which is the one that starts with the odometer and the trip indicator. (In that grouping, you will also find the coolant temperature, choice of digital speedometer or outside temperature, and the maintenance service interval indicator.) Go to that menu, and press the up or down arrow until you see "Run Flat Indicator". If you "Reactivate" by pressing the + key, it will then go into a mode where it learns your current wheel rotation speeds (assuming all four tire pressures are currently correct.)
