Here in Colorado, Woody's wheel works does a good job at a decent price, it can be fixed to look brand new, just have to look around to find the right place.

My suggestions, given that was just your first day, is similar to when you curb rash the front bumper. Wait a while. You WILL do it again (and again), until you develop new habits.
You can make the rim rash look a LITTLE better while waiting to finish your education by using some fine grit sandpaper to take the rough edges out of the gash.

I had a similar damage on the BMW 323i when my teenage kids drove it. I used a portable motor tool (like Dremel) at lower speed (5000 rpm) and fine grit sanding head followed by polishing stone. It takes out the rough ridges but one can still see the damage albeit may be less noticable. I didn't have it repaired by the wheel and tire shop as the kids are still driving the car.
