I think what old-man means is that when the roof is open, and you're trying to close it, it shows the message. It's happened to me a couple times when I'm carrying things that fit tightly under the lid, and some hard driving made the items dislodge the trunklid from its contact points. Just open the trunk and try to re-close the lid, and you'll be fine.

This error message came up for me. I couldn't put my top down. I knew that the seperator in the trunk (aka trunk partition) needs to be down to put the top down, however, mine was already down and I still got the error message.
Took it into the dealer and they said the trunk partition sensor went bad, needs to be ordered from Germany. Took a whole week!
However, it has now been a couple months after having it installed and no problems.

another solution
check to see that the wire connection underneath the right side trunk separator post is connected... mine was not and as soon as I plugged it back in the top worked normally No need to goto the mechanic

Been having this issue on and off for MONTHS. About to have my friend lock me in the trunk so I can poke and prod things until it works. Been to the dealer several times and have hundreds invested already and top still only works intermittently. I'll be following this thread and reply with any findings.

After being shut in my own trunk, here are my revelations:
The trunk gets HOT QUICKLY, don't put anything in there that needs to stay cold! It's also as small as it looks. I'm 5'4 and had to suck it in!
There is only 1 electrical relay that could possibly be related to the top. Standing outside the trunk looking in it's the plastic holder on the right, if you take it apart there's a small circuit board and a relay with 2 wires. I have not, however, fixed the issue of the top coming down so I think the assembly might have gone, taking it to a mechanic next week.

I think you need to start with diagnostics, which may not help much. Just wanted to thank you for the chuckle you gave me about your observation about the trunk temperature. Hope you were not in there for too long.

After SEVERAL trips to the mechanic, and a few THOUSAND dollars of GUESSING at the problem, I finally took my car to a new mechanic and am completely baffled at how the previous people are still in business.
Turns out in my car, perhaps in all our R230's, there is no computer code for "Convertible top pump is not responding/dead" so instead the display picks a random code for the trunk or top. This guy replaced the pump and for a week I have not had any problems whatsoever.
