Different manufacturer's tires on front vs rear.

As everybody here knows, rear tires wear out faster than the front on our SLKs. Since the front and rear tires are of different sizes, is it ok to replace the rears with tires from a different manufacturer? Or is it recommended to use same manufacturer's tire on all 4 tires?

The handling characteristics will be different. It is definitely recommended to put all 4 of the same model tires. However, I have Toyo T1-R's up front and Yokohama Advan Sports in the back. As long as you get used to the way your car behaves, you're ok.
