first gen SLK vs. Miata
HI:
I thought I ask this question here (although the answer might be bias but I would like your reason). My little brother who is looking for a used convertible for his wife and is thinking of getting either a '98-'00 SLK or '03-'05 Miata. Both would have leather seats. The price is almost same in that range.
I owned a '93 Miata before and boy it was really fun. I have never owned a Mercedes convertible but have or currently owned at least 3 Benzes (all E-class). He and I haven't gone out and test drive either car but we figure the short drive wouldn't tell us much about the characteristics of both cars.
So, what do you guys and gals think?? Thanks

SLK 55 AMG
The Miata will be the funner car to drive. As long as you take it with a manual. The 32 AMG would be the only one to give a Miata a run for its money.
A 230K or 320 will be slightly faster in a straight line. The SLK also has more room (both in the cabin as well as the trunk).
Anyway... I hope you're not going to base your choice of car on the fact that it has leather seats. At least for me, that would not be an important criteria when shopping for a convertible. What you should be looking for is the "feel" the car provides you. So definitely go and drive both! Some people like the comfier and quieter ride of the SLK as well as the vario roof. Others prefer the Miata's light weight and nimble feel.
Oh, and as you're asking questions about the first gen SLK, it helps to ask those questions in the right forum
