SLK/R171: Will the AMG have a 6-spd??

P.S. I would love an F1 style gearbox.

It can't hurt...but lord knows I've tried!
look at two facts:
- there is a version of the Speedshift-transmission in the new AMG-models (SL55, E55, SLK55) with functionality to shift gears on the steering wheel. No paddles but buttons. Since these version holds the selected gear even at kickdown, this is the current technology AMG uses. It combines manual and automatic transmission pretty perfect
- VW and Audi are offering a transmission called DSG, a system with two clutches in it which allowes gear shifts without a lack of acceleration. It has a manual and automatic mode of course. The two clutches eliminate each kind of bucking during gear shift. It comes in the new TT with the V6 and in the GolfR32. This could, I repeat COULD, be a systems DC is also working on. In my opinion this would be the product of choice.

Better than the SMG oder SMGII in the M-models of BMW. They are very good on the racetrack (or driving the car like this), but what about the way back home from track. Buckling like hell, you need to learn driving such a car.
By the way, I love my Speedshift in my SLK32, it is pretty fast, has a good manual mode (missing the opportunity to switch gears on the wheel) and does not shift a lot when it should not. Especially in S-mode fits pretty perfect to a fast run on the track, it even shifts down at the right time.....

About AMG getting a manual... yea.. i wish.. most high preformance cars (360 Modena, SL55, etc..) are now getting F1 style shifting. Even though F1 style (ie: clutchless) shifting is faster than humanoid shifting, it takes away from the acutal driving pleasure IMO. These trannies were created for use on the track, where every thousandths of a second counts. In real life, time is not as much of a pressure, so i would prefer a true shift-yourself style transmission. But as i said, a F1 style, would be preffered by MB and AMG... but were looking what 5-10 years from now..?
The SMG is a very technical piece of machinery. To stop it from buckling, just drive it like a stickshift; let go of the gas before you shift a little. People have complained about the M3 SMG not having a gas valve controller, so that when you shift the hass is decreased slightly, so that buckling doesn't occur as hard.
Anyway, let the car fly and it is almost perfect

The SL55 still is a convential auto box w/o a clutch it just shifts faster than a normal auto which is optimized for comfort and a gradual change in the power when shifting vs a hard jerk.
