Just had 36k service (MB Dealer) done and have been told it will need an Auto oil and filter change at 37.5k @ cost of nr £300!! (apparently they have to take the engine sump off to get to the filter!)

Been driving Mercedes auto's for the last 20 years (S class w220 & R170 SLK)
and never to my knowledge had to change the Trans oil before.

Anybody got any background on this?

Not sure, if you'll come back to read this, but yes. You are at about the mileage when this is needed. In the US, some dealers charge $500-$600 for this service. I had some coupons and got it for around $360.

I try to just see it as hopefully preserving the life of the transmission.

The dealer agreed to do it for £200 So not quite so bad!
