We have a deposit on an slk 350 with the idea of moving up to an slk 55 if we have no problems. The wife wants an automatic and likes the idea of a hardtop vert. We noticed that all the mags seem to consider the boxster s as the top of this class of car so we had to test drive it and a 911 cabriolet. IMO the boxster s is a great handling car and that's where it ends. The build quality is mediocre, straight line performance on the highway is anemic and there are design issues like the seat back getting stuck in the headrest which are rediculous. I would prefer the r170 slk over this car and buy myself a go-kart for my weekend handling needs. I loved the drive of the stick 911 mainly due to the engine sounds, but when we tried the tiptronic it was pathetic. The engine would rev bigtime, but the acceleration was weak. Eventually it's going to come down to a decision between an 06 slk55 and an 06 c6 vette (after the beta testing by first year buyers).
