SLK/R171: 10/1 European Delivery Route Driven & Pictures
Now we drive on to Munich, catching some traffic jams and some rain along the way to challenge us. We spend the weekend in Munich visiting relatives. We leave in the late afternoon Sunday and we hit the Autobahn up past Nürnburg, finding a hotel room and dinner in Adelsdorf. We start out from Adelsdorf after breakfast heading to Volkach, recommended for the beautiful church and quaint little town. Then we drive to Würzburg to pick up the romantic road. We head down the towns of the romantic road, stopping for lunch in Bad Mergenheim and exploring. We drive on with little stops on to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where we explore the town and find a hotel and a place for dinner. The next day, we take in the birds of prey show and castle tour in Schillingfürst, followed by a late lunch in the square in Feuchtwangen. We explore the other towns along the romantic road, including Dinkelsbühl and Nordlingen, and Harburg. We find a pension to stay on the river (Donau) in Donauworth, where we dine in an outside cafe.
Wednesday, it's off down the romantic road to Augsburg, where we explore the inner city square. We pick up some great food at little shops (backery, butcher) that we later dine on in the city square in Landsberg am Lech. After additional exploration in the town of Schongau, we motor down the rest of the romantic road and take advantage of a photo-op in front of the Neuschwanstein castle. We then drive over to Garmisch and on to Mittenwald, where we find a place for the night and dinner.
Thursday, we drive over the border to Scharnitz, over to Leutasch, down to Seefeld in Tyrol and then on to Innsbruck. We drive around Innsbruck, then we head west through the alpine drive of tunnels to Landeck, St. Anton, St. Christoph and up over the Arlberg pass on toward Feldkirch. After a quick diversion into Liechtenstein, we head up to Bregenz (Austria) and on to the German side of Lake Constance (Bodensee). We continue along the lake to Friedrichshafen, where we find a hotel (and dinner) for the night. Friday is a slow drive west along the lake then north up highway 14 to Herrenberg, where I visit a business location and tour the factory and conduct some business meetings (the only business departure of the vacation).
Saturday starts with breakfast at the Hotel Gasthof Hasen. We then explore Herrenberg downtown. Then we hit the road over to the black forest via Freudenstadt. Then we progress on to the black forest high road, through fog and rain by Mummelsee and stopping for a late lunch at Hundseck. Then it is on to Baden-Baden and continuing on the Mercedes tour route down to Offenburg, Ortenberg, Gengenbach, Haslach and Hausach. We continue to Gutach, where we stay in the Gasthaus Engel and eat dinner at a nearby place.
Sunday, we continue to explore the black forest on the route to Triberg and on to Titisee, stopping at numerous cuckoo clock shops and enjoying the scenery. We decide to stay at Titisee and check into Pension Seefrieden so we can spend the afternoon and evening enjoying the area.
Monday, we head to France via Freiberg. We stop for our first French lunch experience (no English, no German) in St. Die and progress through France to stay at the Hotel de la Poste in Vitry, France. The first real French dining experience was great.
Tuesday, we hit the road passing through quaint villages and French countryside. Breakfast was at a service establishment off the A4 highway, but we hop back onto country roads. We head to Sezanne and on to Provins. The next stop was Fontainebleau, with the huge chateau; lunch was bagette sandwiches after walking the downtown and a few pictures. Then it was on to Etampes, Ablis, Ramboullet, and Houdan, where we get a room at the Hotel Christophe.
Wednesday, 10/13 we can get an early start in finding our way up to Vernon and on to Giverny. Several tour busses are there, but we are the first car in the parking lot. We enjoy the gardens, taking the self-guided tour of gardens, water lily ponds and the house...impressive! Then we hit the road to find our way to Paris. We eat lunch in Les Mureaux and then drive on the freeways to the Charles de Gaulle airport, where we leave the SLK at TT Transport by terminal 3.
I SAY GOOD_BYE TO MY SLK ~ 3 pm on 10/13!!!
They shuttle us to the train station, where we get a ticket to Paris, where we explore until Sunday’s flight home.
