Actually, he has an SL55 AMG, but the comparison between the AMG models of SLK and SL is similar (half the price, same power to weight ratio).

Power to weight and torque to weight ratio is very similar But I never go off these figures for any car.

You can play around with these ratios as much as you like, but what accounts for the SL55's ability to make a 3 second advantage from 0-124mph over the SLK55?

Power and torque. And lots of it!

For example, the Porsche CGT has an immensely potent power to weight ratio over the SLR, it has much less weight, smimilar aerodynamics, an extra gear and just as much power.

But what about performance? AMS of Germany tested both on same day with same conditions, what was the outcome? EXACTLY the same 0-60, SLR had better top speed, and beat the CGT from 0-186mph by 4 seconds!

I think getting a car for daily driven is not all about the performance of the car. We all understand that performance is important, but on the street... i think you will notice why the SL have to be so expensive. There's many other features that the SLK dosn't provide. If we're only talking about performance, a Honda NSX can over taken the Ferrari Modeana on track. But there's other important factor except performance. Just my 2 cent

350 SLK on waiting list, expected March '05
to add a little..

If you read Clarksons review he is doing a typical UK journey - solid motorway, followed by classic UK b roads with wet with mud.

The largest comparision to his SL to be had here is the build quality, as most of the time he is sat doing nothing, and he goes to town on this! And as for driving on our UK b-roads, they are sure fun but you'd be a nut to reach the performance edge of the 350, let alone the superior cars mentioned here.

For those that live in countries with wide straight roads, many b-roads are fantastic, typically not straight, narrow with inches for cars to pass (rat runs from work frequently cost drivers wing mirrors as they pass at 40-70mph), and hilly. Though I personally avoid them at peak times, depite the thrills and shortcuts, the risk of small collisions are all too common - and I figure a 350 wing mirror will not be cheap.
