Still Just Rumours

I think that's the rumour...and I've also heard that it may be as late as a year from when the R171 is introduced. Just rumours though.

That would be cool, but the only rumors I've read were that it would get a 3.2L V6 (same as current engine with tweaks) or that it would get a 3.0L GDI V6 (all-new gasoline direct injection with supercharger). About 375hp either way.

A supercharged 3.7L V6 would be sweet. RENNtech's 3.8L conversion for the SLK32 gets around 440hp, so the 3.7 should easily make it to 400hp. If MB makes room for some wider tires on the R171, it should end up quicker than the SL55 and E55. Now, if only they can keep from making it ugly.

The SLK R171 AMG will definitely not have a 3.7L nor a 3.0L V6 Kompressor engine. But it will be a dream car

I am not allowed to write more detail about the upcoming engine but I can refer to a German car magazine that wrote: The SLK R171 AMG will have a V8 engine without supercharger.

Or you just walk into the front door and get invited to have a close look at the new SLK AMG personally. At least that happened 3 weeks ago with our board of directors at AMG. The specs aren't final yet, but it's going to be one hell of a machine.

Hi Roland

That's what we talked about on the phone. Check it out and look at the rear exhaust

ahh!! it's true! you can actually see the F1 nose buldge and the lines on the hood.

Just hope it doesn't look like a catfish. Otherwise it looks like a mini-SL, very good.

Just read (Autocar Magazine) that the 2004 (April) launch of SLK should be with the supercharged 3.7 litre engine and around 380 bhp and with an extra 50 litres of boot space thanks to better roof design.

Based on floorpan of new C-class, base car has 192bhp 1.8 liter four.

Just hope it doesn't have SLR nose, although article says " the SLK adopts the SLR's contoured bonnet" and it sure looks from the photos it might....

Article by Greg Kable, German contributor.

Wrong information, there won't be a supercharged 3.7 litre engine for the AMG.
Correct is that the R171 is planned to be presented at Geneva in March 2004 and that the new roof folding mechanism will offer additional trunk space.
Based on floorpan of new C-class, base car has 192bhp 1.8 liter four.
There will be at least 2 engines with the 1.8 L engine with different performance figures.

It definitely will have the SLK-like nose. No doubt about it. This information is confirmed by a DC Executive Board member.

Tim won't tell and neither will I. But I really love AMG's decision and am happy that it's not going to be a 3.7l V6 Kompressor.

I hope MB goes back to using 4 valve engines, these 3 valve engine don't scale as well as the 4 valve.

It doesn't matter. Going by a previous discussion on the Benzworld SLK forum, nobody would believe you if you told them the truth.

Well, it's no secret that Mercedes-Benz is going back to using 4 valves in their upcomming V8 line which is to be introduced somewhen in 2005.

Hi guys,

looking at this is dicussion one thing is pretty clear.....nothing is known public at this time.... Wether we argue on 3,7l Kompressor or 5,5l V8 without, AMG will decide what they think is best for the car.

Since I look at AMG and their model for few years now I am pretty confident the will take the right decision, especially since we all can see those excellent cars in the last 18 months like E55, SL55.

So my final guess is, that they will upgrade the performance of the existing SLK to a level around 400hp, most likely with an non-supercharged V8 (like the CLK) or with a V6-turbo (like started with the CL65). But if even they do with an R5 Biturbo it will be a great car.......won´t it

Bernd

BMW Z3 S/C & 99 Mroadster
do you guys know how bad this car is going to kick the BMW z4's ***? Seriously BMW is in third and quickly fading to fourth in the roadster world. I dont care which engine it has. I just cant WAIT to trade my M roadster for one
