I would not use a LSD on the SLK...... Rumors around that it is not required and can unbalance the car on the track. I read somewhere that they do not use a LSD even on the F1 Saftey Car....

Enjoy!

The F1 saftey car lacks an LSD because they aren't dragging the car for maximum acceleration, rather, increasing its cooling (reliability), handling, and dropping weight. These mods allow it to to keep a "tolerable" pace for the F1s behind it - keeping thier tires warm.

The SLK has a longer wheelbase than my RX-7 & its a mid 11 sec car. The SLK also has traction control which, even with over 600Hp in the Kleemann K8, didn't let the car get sideways.

If you want max acceleration, an LSD will help a bit. Its not any more dangerous than any other high Hp car with an LSD (more safe than a Viper which lacks traction control entirely....which is what those owners want - no electronic grandmas).

See ya,
-Matt

Still confused on best way to shift for "drag racing"

Ricky (and Dinko),

Sorry I'm still confused.

Ricky, you said "put it in Manual and let the computer shift for you". How does that work? I thought in manual it does NOT shift and will just bounce around the red line with rev limiter?

So my real question is: Does the car peform better when you upshift with the buttons (or twitching the stick), rather than leaving it in D, and just stomping on the accelerator? For a straight line 0-60 or 1/4 mile run.

Dinko, are you saying, in your run, you were NOT trying to hit shift buttons, but just did accidentally?

This is somewhat true. An LSD will always improve the amount of power put to the ground. And it will make the car potentially faster if you have the skills to use it. It would be most important in drag racing and autocross where wheelspin is a major issue. However, if you aren't experienced with high performance driving, know what a LSD is for, and how it changes the ability of the car to rotate, then should not buy an LSD.

Ricky, you have no idea what you are talking about on this one.

The SLK55 and C55 have a Manual mode, the computer will not shift for you if you don't, it will just go right into redline and the fuel cuts off. You are thinking of something like a C230, or your SL500 when you tap the **** lever to the left it WILL shift for you at redline. The SLK55 will do that also if you only tap the lever to the left. But it has a separate manual mode that WILL not shift for you.

Also, for the best times, leaving it in auto is by far best.

Correct, I accidentally hit it; the car was in "S" mode.

Dinko, thanks I learned something. I didn't realize that with the accelerator floored and the autotrans in the D "gear" and automatically running to almost redline before shifting (this I've done) that if you hit the upshift button it will actually upshift at a lower rpm than what the computer was going to do.

I'll have to try that, just to see the (ill) effect.

Whoops, you're totally right. This is why I need another AMG
Care to lend me your C55?

No JamE55, I wasn't talking about your E180.
