Slk350(weekend), Mazda 3s (boosted)
get some focal speakers, 3 ways and you get more thump. When i brought my uncles slk to get navi put it, we had to change out the bose speakers to the focals and its a big difference. Since the car is soo small, your gonna sacrafice a lot of room in the trunk.

A Jl Audio W7 will cause an earthquake within a mile radius

Honestly, I'm a big w7 fan. I think it is the best sub hands down. However, a w7 requires a fairly large box. I have a 10w7 in my truck, and I'm thinking about moving it into my car, but I think it might take too much space.

Also, if you buy a w7, match it up with a JL amp. My 10w7 is matched to a 500x1 JL amp and it shakes the neighborhood. If you are looking for loud and clean base, go with any w7 sub...

Might want to try w6

I think the w7 will take up too much space as well. Even though our cars don't have a spare tire ... that little space isn't enough for even 1 w6.

FYI - just found out my 10w7 in a ported box WILL fit in the turnk. It takes up about 50% of my trunk space, but I still have enough room to put a napsack and other small items in the trunk. Keep in mind that my box is ported, therefore its smaller then a non-ported box. But it pounds nonetheless.

The problem I'm worred about is amp placement. One installer thinks my amps will fit behind my seats. I hope he is right...

you can fit a 12inch JL w7 sup in the trunks of our cars if you take out the spare tire and you can fit 2 amps on the back wall of your trunk just below the dvd navi cd i have a 4/300 and a 1/500 watt amp and it fits perfect in my trunk i will post pics of it when i can figure out how to make them small enough to fit

How does a sub in the trunk sound with the top down? Talked to installer today and he was insisting that a sub in the trunk will be useless with the top down, since the top will muffle all the sound. Anyone second this opinion?

He wants me to get some 5.25" focal subs (2 or 3) and put them in fiberglass enclosure on passenger side front seat (would take a few inches of leg room).

Thoughts?

I agree. IMO Sub in the trunk 1)takes up too much valuable space and 2)would sound okay but only for deep bass. I would put smaller drivers in the coc*pit. (you can't spell ****pit! I have my seats angled back so that it leaves a decent amount of room for a custom box to go behind the seat. That's what I'm going to do. Sadly, I still haven't completed this project because of little time.

The only concern I would have with your installer's suggestion is that you would reduce leg room for the passenger. Have a seat there first. The footwell is already considerably shorter than the drivers side.

i had 1 12" jl w7 subwoofer. it requried a lot of space, and i don't like the look of just one. but to add another sub would be expensive and overkill, plus i'd need another amp cause i don't think one 500.1 is powerful enough to run 2 12" w7's. for a small car like slk55, i'd look into something with sound quality, not just monster bass, like focal utopia is good but very expensive, but are more known for their clarity in their component speakers. if you want a pretty good quality system without killing the bank, look into 2 10" jl audio w6 v2 subwoofers and a jl1000.1 mono amp, and mbquart premium or diamond hex s500/s600 component speakers, and jl 450.1 amp. i demoed these systems and they sounded very very good. doesn't blow you away like some but very good quality.

if you want a well integrated and designed system, look into Reus Audio systems. they do their own custom systems and installations, not something you buy online then piece together.

Here is how I put 2 10w6v2 in my trunk.

There is enough space for 2 10" or 1 12" sub in SLK's trunk, just have to think where to hide the amp

Saridi - that looks amazing! Is that an SLK? If it is, how does it sound (top down and top up)? Wow!

Yes, it is my SLK280. I also put some DLS components speakers into my SLK. I think 2 10w6 is more than enough for a small roadster, unless you aiming for serious SPL rather than SQ.

Regarding to top-up/down issue, I think the subs sounds good in our SLK even it is top-down (FYI, Z3/4's trunk doesn't work well with subs). But sure there is no way to compare with SUV or Hatchback, where the sound can go directly into the cabin
