55's locking torque converter observations and ?s
Does anyone know at what speed or RPM the torque converter is locked on the 55? Also is it locked right after each gear change or does it have to wait until the turbine and pump match speeds? On a side note I assume the 350/280 use a standard locking torque converter in high gear at about 45MPH.
Also on the 55 when braking or slowing down the transmission downshifts through the gears (like a manual) with the converter locked up. It seems to stay locked up until you have stopped the car. While this is a great for performance it can make everyday stopping a little jerky. It would be nice if the locking torque converter could be decoupled during breaking (maybe in C mode).
Can anyone confirm the conditions that the converter locks and unlocks on the 55? Does the 7G also lock on all forward gears in the 350/280 even though it is listed as an AMG enhancement or is it a standard type locking converter (top gear above about 45MPH)?

Ok
Hi,
I don't know a lot about the AMG 7G Speedshift but I can give you some info on the torque converter lock-up function in the 5-speed AMG Speedshift that is fitted to the SLK32AMG (which I used to own!).
The 32's box would lock in all forward gears in excess of 1500rpm engine speed.
I don't know when it unlocked but would have thought this engine speed would be a good point to have done so!
Hope this is of some use...
Cheers,
AUSSLK55AMG

Well it looks like I found part of the answer and the torque converts are deferent in the 280/350 and the 55. Here is an e-mail from MB.
Dear Mr. Julien:
Thank you for your internet inquiry.
The torque converter for the SLK55 AMG is unique to that vehicle. The
SLK280/SLK350 utilizes a different torque converter that does not feature
lock up in all forward gears, nor does it feature manual mode, speed shift,
and other AMG enhancements.
If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to e-mail us again
or call us at 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (1-800-367-6372).
