Alroumi: A good set of coilovers will be much better than just springs but the cost is very different. If you just replace the springs you can achieve a lower look but the stock shock will not be matched to the new spring rate. Coilovers match the shock to the spring rate and you also get an adjustable ride height. A set of springs would cost $350-500 (not installed) but coilovers are probably in the $2000 range so there is a big difference in cost. I may try springs first. If I don't like the ride, I can sell the springs and then get coilovers.

I dont need springs or coilovers to tell you the truth, first of all i think the AMG one's are designed for the car and are tested and reasearched by the proffessionals amg and I wouldnt change it!

I agree, the AMG suspension is designed for the car and is great but I want a lower stance!!

The AMG suspension is great, but the car was designed to be priced in the low $60k's as well.
The best bet is the KW 's which list for slightly over $2k with an additional 4-6 hour install. We are fortunate to have this application, considering our low production numbers. I'm sure the car will be glued to the road.

http://www.kw-suspension.com/en/30_P...pe=all&zeile=2

It gets pricey as well because an alignment is indicated each time the height is changed.

The question is has anyone done a KW variant 3 yet? I hear there's problems clearing the wheels that might require spacers. Not what I'm trying to do, although it's the cheapest option for coilovers.

KW is working on a new variant 3 exclusively for the SLK55 due to the wheel clearance problems with the cone shaped springs. The current one is for non-AMG SLK R171 models.

It should be on the market by July according to KW this week.

About time!! I wonder if KW will use the newly designed coilover for other MB's as well since I have the same issue with the cone shaped spring.

Interesting.........I've had the KW3 kit fitted to my 55 for about 3 months now......absolutely no issues with fitment at all.

Topboss: Great, you are one of the view. Who installed them? What type of wheels do you have and do you have the exact wheel measurements? KW said it's been done but it all depended on the wheels.

Depends on the wheels and how low you want to drop the car. I know for a fact that my 18" AMG wheels will not clear the suspension without, at the very least, an 8mm spacer.

Wheels are:

AMG "SL65" style
Fronts - 8.5 x 19 ET30 225/35/19
Rears - 9.5 x 19 ET31 255/30/19

Only issue I had was slight rubbing on the very outer edge towards the rear of the rear arch when going over big dips (this was with 235/265 tyres). But this is due to the offset on the rear being a little lower than recommended and not a fault of the KW' kit. Since fitting the 225/255's I've had no issues what so ever. The ride height is about 20mm lower than the std AMG setup.

Not tried it with the std alloys.......could do so over the next week or so if any of you guys/gals would find it helpful.

Suspension was fitted by Demon Tweeks in Wrexham (UK)

Not too be too critical, but you did have a problem with the setup or you wouldn't have adjusted your wheels. That's the point and the problem KW identifies. They are making a variant 3 version specifically for the SLK55 so you don't have to go through that. KW states the current version is only for non AMG R171 models for the reason you described.

Not so.........

Like I said.....the issue is nothing to do with the KW coilovers, it is solely to do with the offset of the wheel. Had the same issue pre-kw's on the std AMG suspension. The rear offset should ideally be ET35 when going to a 19" rim, the AMG wheels I have are ET31.
