should winter rims be the same width front and back?

Hey Im new here. I've been lurking for a little while whilst i wait for my SLK55 to show up (im importing a used one from germany).

As i live in sweden, we get rather long and cold winters with lots of snow and mandatory winter tires for 4 months of the year.

I've read somewhere that winter tires should be the same width front and back, and i was just wondering if anyone could tell me why?

When poking around i also found this post...

Brillaint and informative forums, by the way...

In short, narrower tires are more suitable for winter driving as smaller contact surface grips to the snow/ice better. So just go with the 225/40/18 all the way around if you are using your stock wheels.

17' wheels w/225/45/17 tires are an option but you have to find a set that can adequately clear the huge AMG brakes.

Let me know how you do with such a light car with so much rear wheel power in the winter. With or without winter tires I feel that will be difficult.

should be fun

get 225s all around as maxboost said.
if the tire is wide it rides on top if the snow, the narrower footprint helps the tire "dig" deeper where the snow is more packed.

kinda like when the car goes through a puddle and rides on top of it (aquaplaining) because the tires are wide so they dont cut through the water but ride on top

Its not the rim, but the width of the tire that should be the same for better tracking.
I'm running stock SLK 350 17's (front 7.5" rear 8.5") both with 225 wintersports with excellent results.

brilliant. thats what i wanted to know.

what exactly do you mean by tracking?

Whats the relationship between rim width and tire width? I mean, if you can fit 225s on both 7.5" and 8.5" wide rims, is there a certain flexibility due to the material (rubber). Or are the two unrelated?
