Stereo overloading?

When cruising on the freeway at 75 MPH with the top down, I generally have the Harmon Cardin stereo turned all the way up. Usually, I am listening to my Ipod, also turned all the way up, and my stereo will cut out after approximately an hours time. This is really irritating because when the stereo cuts out, so does the navigation and everything else associated with the Command system. What are the alternatives? Do I take it in for warranty? or can I put in a new system to replace the existing? Maybe just a new amp for the stereo? I am not sure how to resolve this issue. The sound on the stereo system is acceptable, but this problem is really irritating.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

Thanks for the responses. I'll check the battery terminal, but I don't think that is the problem. It only happens when the stereo is all the way up and after about an hour or so. The heater is not on. I thought thast may be it, but I am now driving with the top down in SoCal with the A/C on. I am going to mention it to the MB service rep at my next service.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

What MY and build date is your car?

Early early versions of MY 05 had audio gateway overheat issues.

My later build (April 05) had intermitent (but very rare) issues (volume to max by itself once, shutdown twice) over 18 months. Also would get lost with MP3 disks occasionally, or take a very long time to start playing.

At 10K maintenance told them, they checked and updated the COMAND and Audio Gateway software.

Also added "new functions" like, more shuffle play modes for mp3 and now the MUTE buttons not only mutes but also PAUSES the mp3. I assume these functions are in MY07 (maybe even 06), but I sure appreciated them.

Also it never gets a hung/lost mp3 when starting up, anymore, which was my main gripe.

Thanks for the info. Something is definately overheating. I'll mention the audio gateway issue to my service rep on the next service. Is there a TSB or is this just a common knowledge issue? My SLK55 is a 2006 built in 07/05.

Thanks again.

I actually think that there's a recall on overheating COMAND units. You should really check with your dealer on that. It sounds to me like it's getting too hot for operation and protecting itself by shutting down.

There was a TSB published by MB on this perhaps 18 months ago. You should be able to locate it in the TSB "sticky" at the top of this forum. I have an early '55 and had the same problem. MB acknowledged the problem and said they were working on a fix, and several months later they published the TSB which instructs the dealer to add a cooling fan to the audio gateway. My dealer made the repair to my car and that solved the problem. I'm under the impression that newer '55's came from the factory with the cooling fan already installed. How old is your car?

Do you all have the TSB number? Or can you tell me where you found this? I am interested as well.
