Looking to Sell '05 SLK55- Best way to Sell?

I am looking to sell my 2005 SLK 55 AMG. Silver with all black interior. Just under 30K miles. I was going to trade in to a dealer for an Audi and felt I got low balled. They said $39,000. I need to get a car with more seats now that I have 3 kids, but don't want to get suckered in the process. I just want to hear what's fair from other folks who have sold. I live in Southern California. Any advice is appreciated. Has anyone used the auction method with any success as well.

Put it in the forums, autotrader, and ebay. I sold my E55 via the forums but also had them listed in other places. You should be able to get $45k out if it.

The best place by far is ebay.com , you will get many calls daily about it and you'll probably sell it before the auction ends. Send best place is autotrader.com and cars.com , you will probably get a couple of calls a week there. You should also list it on this forum, but I would recommend using other sources as well to get a maximum price.

You'll be lucky to get 45K out of it. The 41K E-bay car had no warranty. I'm still trying to get 46-47K out of mine with less than 14K miles and 100K CPO warranty (it's been in the Trader for 2 months). A few tire kickers, but that's it. E-bay is a waste of money unless you want to give it away. I think with that many miles, the Audi dealer was being pretty generous at 39K. Leads me to believe he was trying to bend you over on whatever you were looking to buy from him. These cars are unfortunately very soft right now, and it's only going to get worse. Auction is the worst thing you could do, these are going for mid 30's tops.

Ebay is not a reliable source to see what any car is selling for, there is no way of knowing if an ebay transaction even went through (most of the time, they don't go through). I sold and bought every car on ebay in the past 5-6 years and every time, ebay was simply a search feature look for a car and the transaction was completed way before the end of the auction. IMO, you should treat ebay as an advertising channel and not treat it as an "auction". You're simply getting your car "out there", and there is no better way of doing it than ebay.

I would take the $39k on the trade in. I dont know what the sales tax rate in CA is but assuming it is at least 6%, you are getting the equivalent of at least$41,500 for the car, and I doubt you will do much better on your own with 30k miles. I was only offered $38k as a trade-in from a MB dealer on the east coast for my 2005 SLK 55 and it has only 15k miles.

I think is pretty fair price since you're going to get tax credit for the new car. Last month I just missed by a hour to someone who bought the 2006 SLK55 (and its red interior too - had to have red interior for me; silver with red interior or black with red interior) with 1800 miles for $45,000.

Sorry but there is no way in hell an 06 SLK55 wtih 1,800 miles would go for $45,000. I have shopped for a long time (4-5 weeks( for an 06 and there weren't a single low-mileage car under $50k anywhere (ebay, autotrader, car.com, local, etc). I ended up buying one with 3k miles for 53,000$ and it was the best deal by far.

According to KBB, such car in an excellent condition has $51,000 private-party value and a $54,000 retail value (what it would cost from dealer). Average price on autotrader for an 06 SLK55 is 54,000$ and the lowest priced car has 17,000 miles and is still listed at 49,000$. Please stop misleading people with wrong information.

Falco597, I suggest you use KBB.com to find out a fair price of your car as far as both trade-in and private party value.

Take it to Car Max...

I brought my '05 Dodge Magnum there to sell it to them outright, and they were about $500 off from where I thought I would be. Good enough!

Saw an E55 when I was there and couldn't believe it, when I came back to check it out there was a S55 parked right next to it. The price they gave me on my '07 Jeep SRT was insane, I basically ended up driving it for free.

Loved the E55, but with less than a $5K price difference for the S, same year and almost the same mileage, I had to go with the S.

Bring them your car, give them about an 1/2 hour or so and they'll sit you down with the price they'll pay for your car. It doesn't matter whether you're buying a car or not, it is what it is.

The price they give you is good for 7 days so there's plenty of time to make up your mind.

I absolutely had it with private sale, including Craig's list, Auto Trader and eBay. Tire kickers who want you to give it away, and when we're talking about a ride like yours, it's a whole other story...

"My dad said he would cosign a loan for me but I'm not sure the bank is even going to approve me, so if you can work and wait a couple of weeks BLAH BLAH BLAH"

Three transactions @ Car Max and I'm a huge fan, bring both sets of keys, owner's manual, registration and insurance card and title if you have it and hopefully you'll be just as big a fan!

I don't know when you bought your car but that's what I found and I also find a 2005 SLK55 for $45K with 5000 miles; I didn't bother to see because it's red.

I traded in my 06 with 29K miles for $45K. Keep in mind the trade-in price is somewhat deceptive because really the dealer is mostly considering the difference between the price of the car you are buying and the price of the trade in. If he gives you more on trade-in he'll give you less on a price break on the new car. Just shifting money around. I kinda look at it like the dealer gave me $40K on my trade-in and a $5K discount on my E63 (but I negotiated down the E63 price as well )
