Two issues I need help with

I absolutely love my SLK55. It's awesome, but I have two issues I could do with some help with.

I will be needing new tires (9000 miles on the originals (-: ). Does anyone have recommendations - I live in Oregon, where we have wet winters and bone dry summers, so I want something that works well in both conditions... Any suggestions??

I also have an engine rattle problem - when driving normally, I have noticed it at around 3000 rpm - it's pretty quiet, but noticeable - it's like old cars with their rocker/tappets set wrong - Any ideas - I have also recently noticed when it has been cold, the noise has been much louder and pronounced at 2000 rpm to about 3000rpm and goes away after a mile or so.

Will be taking it back to the dealer to get it checked, but I was wondering if you have any knowledge/experience with this problem?

Many thanks

As far as the engine rattle, I believe that sound is normal when the engine is warming up.

As far as tires go, the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's are the best I've ever driven.
Quiet and very good in wet conditions.
Well worth the extra $$$$ IMO

I have to agree from reading about the owners impressions on tyres, it seems that the PS2 Michelin's are the "creme de la creme" of tyres for our cars.

I have the same noise. It happens upon early acceleration. I thought it might be the lifters, but i'm no expert. I noticed it after putting in the green filters. More air causing engine changes? It is barely noticeable so I am not worried.

wow wow... i think you guys are mixing two issues..

the rattle at idle is lifters. they should be quiet, but some customers are reporting noise- especially at start. most of the time mercedes will do nothing about it unless it is bad...

the rattle at initial acceleration - is most likely pinging. adding better air filters might lean you a out a bit and make you more prone to pinging. put back the original filters - if you still have same noise at acceleration- you have a problem.
