the exhaust? Went to a custom exhaust shop and quoted me 3-4 hours to put an xpipe in. He is going to flange the front to the stock 2nds and put in a flange in the rear in case I need to add a resonator later to quiet them b/f resale. At $65 for 4 hours is $260 for the job worse case? Does this sound high. He said he would only TIG weld on SS, and that he wouldn't try it with exhaust on the car as it would not make a good weld, leak, etc...

Also, on '06 MB moved the 2nd CAT's to just past the bend, right before the resonator. Is it worth trying to remove them (ie, extra labor) or just leave them in. In the past I've usually removed them on my cars to free up the flow and draw a bit deeper rumble from the exhaust note. Unfortunately, I think MB doesn't want us messing with the exhaust so they now make it in 2 solid pieces - from the collector to the 2nd CAT, from the 2nd CAT back. Crazy.

I just had my resonator cut out and Xpipe simply welded into place. I think it took about 45 minutes.

The guy you talked to seemed to know his stuff. Yes, you have to take off the exhaust to get the x-pipe professionally welded. There are at least 2 good things about taking off the exhaust for modification, first, you want leak free, consistent welds between the joints, second, to eliminate any chance of toasting electronics in the car.
