Wet/Dry Tyre advice needed

I nearly came off the road today in my SLK 55 with Wanli S 1088 255/35Z rear tyres. It was the first day I have driven in the rain since purchasing my car. These wheels are shockingly bad in the wet, its like driving on ice!

For London weather (sunny one moment, pouring the next) what tyres would you advise and can I just replace the rear ones?

Any help or advise on this matter would be very much appreciated.

Dunlap Direzza Z1s are pretty much the best tire on the market and perform extremely well in the dry & wet. Wanli's are absolute junk (as you now know). As you can see from the tire rack survey results, get the Z1s, you will not be disappointed. for max performance it really doesn't get better, plus they are actually a bargain considering the performance you get from them. They cost a fraction of what the pilot sports ps2s cost (and are MUCH better).

Here is the tire rack comparison for extreme performance tires (highest level of performance):

Here is the tire rack comparison for max performance summer tires (one performance level lower):

Goodyear F1 Assymetric. Job done. Do a search on them. Camskill is your friend they are mine. Went from contis to these on my 55 and its like going from steel to rubber tyres. Oh they need a few hundred to get the release agent cleared so dont panick on first try !

I have Toyo Proxes T1R tires on our SLK55 and they are awesome on wet and dry roads

Personally I would not mix brands of tires on any performance car. When we bought ours it had Pirelli's on the front and Toyo's on the rear. The handling of the car felt odd because of the different sidewall flex of the two brands of tires.

I recently had matching Toyo T1R's installed on the front and the car feels much more predictable and stable

Good luck with your choice of tires
