New - To Me SLK55

Hi, I've had an R500 for a while now but I picked up a low mileage 06 SLK55 a couple of weeks ago to replace an SLK32. Interesting owning two generations of the same product slot in Mercedes lineup. My 55 is pretty well loaded with all the goodies and Caspian Blue paint. Love the car so far. A definite upgrade over the SLK32 in every way except maybe weight.

One question.....I've been bonked on the head by the trunk lid about a dozen times so far (slow learner). It seems that unless I push the lid up all the way with a fair amount of force and hold it there for a second, the thing will come falling down after a few seconds. Even when it appears to be safely opened fully, the odd vibration while rooting around in the trunk will bring it down on whatever body part happens to be in the way.

I see a gas strut on either side of the deck lid. Are these struts not supposed to prop the lid open? Do they fail routinely? Expensive to replace? I'm getting tired of being bonked on the head.

Congrats on the car. You'll continue to love it.

The struts are really cheap from Merc dealers, I replaced both mine here in UK a few months ago and it cost less than £30 for the pair. Easy 5 min job to fit them too.

Thanks, I ordered a pair from my local MB dealer's parts dept yesterday. $50 US or about £32.88 at todays rates. Somewhat consistent across geography. It will be well worth it. I currently have bumps on my forehead and the back of my head from my trunk lid. Odd that the typically overzealous German engineers got these struts wrong. Maybe the accountants were trying to get involved.
