Too bad the UL don't come w/o deep dish. I one (me?) were to upgrade the wheels the Ultra Light would be a nice feature.

Again you got the choice! How about putting 1/16 UL 8.5x19 w/o deep lip on front AND rear? Shouldn't be a problem to get an excelent look even for the rear by using bigger spacers.

I have visited Carlsson several times (will get some nice Carlsson wheels for my SLK R170 soon) and it is really a very good company, they are situated in an very old but completely renovated old farm of the 18th century....I am sure you will enjoy the mixture of Hi-Tec and old tradition, very mpressive!

The SL65 AMG wheels are definitely my top-top pick for the SLK55, especially in black. Otherwise I'd go with the Brabus IV's (notice that they look very similar).

I put a set of the AMG wheels from the SL65 on my SL55 and they look great!! I think that they would look just as good on the little brother.

Not my taste at all! The design of the Kleemann wheels is not matching the elegant silhouette of the car...just IMHO!

The big difference (for me) is that the Brabus have Deep Dish rear wheels, and the AMG wheels don't. Therefore I personally favour he AMG wheels.

Otherwise the Brabus wheels are indeed similar, and good looking.

Hmmm. I'd prefer to have those extra inches in the rear. I now have the Style V 18x8.5 front and 18x9.5 rear wheels, and that doesn't seem enough already to handle the 500hp of my SL.

Actually, only the Brabus 19x10 wheel has deep dish. The 19x9.5 has pretty much the same lip as AMG or Carlsson.

Harris, can you explain to me when the fenders have to be rolled when selecting rims, and what it actually means to "roll the fenders" and who does this?

Its pretty hard to explain in words, I'll try my best. Rolling the fenders is usually done by a bodyshop with a special tool. When you look at the arc of the fender, the edge is a piece of metal that is rolled/folded inward. Usually the folded area is quite thick, the bodyshop can use a special tool to make the "rolled/folded" body part thinner, so that the sidewall of a tire will not rub against the fender edge. We call this rolling the fenders. Do you know what I mean (vaguely)?

Mercedes (just like all other German cars) throw off a ton of brake dust. Therefore, I am not fond of any of the double spokes as they are impossible to keep clean.

So this is (I'm guessing) what needs be done when (e.g.) the 10 x 19 Style IV multipiece wheels are mounted on the SL55. The AMG brochure mentiones "Modifications Required", which sounds like a eufemism for "Needs fenders rolled".

What I don't understand is that the 10 x 19 Style IV and the 9.5 x 19 Style IV wheels wear the same size tire (285/30). Is the choice then only aesthetic? Or is there an advantage that I'm not getting?

It's a bit here, but I'm guessing the same goes for the SLK55.

Well, there are several issues to your questions:

1. different tire manufacturers design tires differently. Some tires have a more squared sidewall and some tires have a more rounded sidewall. Although they are 285, but a Michelin PS2 285 might be a Toyo T1-S 285.5 or even 295 (btw, there is no such thing as 285.5).

2. if you put a 285 tire on a 19x10 wheel, the tire will stretched out more than a 19x9.5 wheel. Even though the tires have the same size, the actual contact path will be different.

3. there isnt a general rule, it all varies by the size of the wheel, size of the tire and the design of the tire.
