SLS/R197/C197 AMG: Mercedes SLS AMG – Detailed Information and Pictures
Many people had the same impression of the car and that was "where or how could you ever use this vehicle on public roads b/c it is THAT fast"
The professional drivers gave hair raising hell rides at nearly full blast and it was inspiring.
This is my personal "toy", the 1st SLS Roadster delivered to a customer in the USA. Auctioneer Jay Leno , at the February 2011 Boca Raton Concours d'Elegance, sold the rights of purchase to DuPont Registry Magazine. Designated as a launch vehicle, options included Alubeam Silver paint, red top, classic red leather, carbon fiber trim, red brake calipers, Alcantara steering wheel, 10 spoke alloy rims, and Bang & Olufsen 1000 watt stereo system. MSRP was $226,595-. Used as a corporate/press car for years, I acquired it in 2018 with 3300+ miles. Factory data confirms that only 4% of the SLS variants were delivered in Alubeam Siver given the nearly $13,000 expense, and the fact that only 2-3 could be completed per week in this color. My RO came with a beautiful book in case with letter from Stephen Cannon, Vice President of Marketing MB USA, LLC. It also has SLS AMG order book with leather samples, paint samples , & recommended interior combinations. Transmission upgrade & air bag recall correction have been done. Mechanically it has been bullet proof so far. I have seen very few on the streets in the greater Washington DC- Baltimore, MD area. I had the opportunity to drive a spectacular SLS GW yesterday , with only 2500+ original miles. Optioned in similar fashion as my Roadster , it was cosmetically & mechanically perfect. While I will give it strong consideration, I prefer the more discrete, understated Roadster to the iconic GW version. I believe the RO version to be a better car! Given that a SLS BS was auctioned today in Middle East , with $800K (all in) cost to the buyer, standard GW & RO SLS versions appear to be a nice bargain, & more affordable/practical alternative to other supercars. Having owned a 300SL roadster for 31 years, I have come to appreciate power combined with timeless beauty & rarity especially when also combined with a great stereo, cruise control, air scarf, & 3.6 second 0-60 MPH time (with addition of Renntech air filter). IMO, at some point depreciation curve will flatten, & if not better for the bottom feeders! A number of my 300SL buddies bought their 300SL's for less than $6000-. Who knew?
