Correct. Coupes are the only "gull wings".
That makes them more unique!

The Alpha rich bought them on the first go around. Now it's the collectors and true enthusiasts that know how good these cars really are. The inventory was over 70+ in the US a year ago now it's down to about 30. Once these cars are purchased up over the next 1-2 years. Not many will see the light of day again. I know I have no intention of EVER selling my SLS and, have talked to many other owners that say the same. I will drive my about 7,000 miles a year and really enjoy it. I didn't buy it to collect. Its my son's in 34 more years... He will be 35.

I guess I don't fit the mold...put double the miles she had on her in only a few short months. Although I think I paid $35k less than I should have...

Final Edition?

Hi everyone,
I have been reading this thread and most of the recent threads since finding this forum 2 weeks ago. I am actively looking to buy one after having my buddy's 2012 coupe for a month in the summer. I loved it.

I have some questions, and would appreciate your input. I was planning to spend about 150-160k for a coupe with low miles (under 5k) and well optioned. I see they are hard to come by.

What do you all think about buying a 2015 Final Edition for 250k instead?
Will it appreciate in the future more than a non-final edition? I.e. is it worth spending 100k more just to have the Final Edition?

I do plan to drive it, but also plan to keep it like I do with most of my off road vehicles (I never owned an exotic but have several off road vehicles including a Sportsmobile).

Is the Final Edition really 100k "better". Yes it has the carbon fiber hood and wing and nicer interior in my opinion. But 100k for being one of 350 cars-I am not sure.

Your input is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks and I look forward to meeting you guys in SoCal. I am in other car groups (Sportsmobile and Jeeps) and like to meet others with common interests.

Steve

The problem is that the MSRP of the final edition was around $250.
They will have more value as collector cars because of the limited production to 350 total.
However, if you plan to drive it. I do t think will be a wise investment, because most of them are already in collections with a very low mileage.
On the other hand, the regular SLS MSRP was $200-225 and now selling lower than the MSRP 160-190 under 5k miles.
Looks they already bottom depreciation and prices are slowly growing for now on!
As long as you update the transmission and buy a high optioned one, you won't feel the difference.
The big difference is the black series!! That's a totally different animal.
Hope this will help.
Also, coupes will hold the value and appreciate faster just because of the doors!!
Go ahead and buy as fast as possible.
Good luck.

DO what you have a passion for. There are a lot more to these cars then the doors. You can't go wrong. Make sure you drive a Roadster so, you know what you will be missing. There is one at FJ Mercedes in Newport. If you need an intro we can roll up in mine and I will introduce you to the GM. (Then test drive assured.)

PS how in the Hell did your buddy loan you one for a month! I would never loan..... Do tell...

NewportSLS i am not sure of the value of yours in 34 years with 238,000 miles on it. Unfortunetly cars only go for high numbers when they have the original equipment and engine. A high mileage car will not be worth half to a collector.

I do love the SLS but it is not collectible because it is a great car, it was never that good, it is due to rarity and style. My view would be buy one of the long list of cars that are better to drive and give your son a real future classic with low mileage. Unless your not bothered about the value, then drive away and enjoy.

Welcome Steve. Because you plan on driving the car and your looking to protect your investment, as mentioned above, I'd buy a car with low miles and loaded with options. Coupe, roadster, GT, Final Edition, Back Series........they are all appreciating in value.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Please keep them coming.

I realize I am asking for 2 opposing things: drive the car and have a collectible.

My dilemma: Since I only plan to buy one now, and drive it, it is looking like the non-final edition makes more sense. Though I really like the idea of having 1 of 350, and I love the interior diamond pattern. I guess this is a good problem to have, but problem nevertheless.

Any other thoughts?

Any high-item maintenance to use this as a daily driver? I read somewhere the SLR's brakes on all four corners was in the $10k-$30k range every 40k miles or so.

I also daily drove a W140 S600 v12 Coupe for 10 years and probably spent a good $30-$50k keeping it in OEM 100% condition, loved the car and kept pouring money into it that I had a hard time selling.

The SLS maintenance appears reasonable though, which is also appealing.

Fun to follow this thread as I've been watching the prices as well and $120k was the range I was going to enter, never did, and now they're $150k range.

You can have it all...driver and collectible. That's the dual purpose of my SLS. The only thing that impacts it's collectible status is "time". If you are going to sell in the next 5 years after driving it a bunch - yah, you might lose money. If you plan to hold it 10 or more years...you'll make money in the long run. No doubt you'll be daily driving something else by then anyway so the mileage will slow down.

So, my advice is, unless you're going to stretch and go for a Black Series...just find a SLS/GT/Final Edition that you love in terms of options/colors/mileage and don't sweat which version it is. There won't be much delta in price between those 3.

First gen CCB brakes were expensive to replace on many brands of cars - including the SLR. Scary numbers.

Given that the CCB brakes on the SLS are a $12k option, something tells me that to replace them is at most $12k and will probably go down over time. Besides, this generation of CCB are supposed to be lifetime unless you do a lot of heavy track usage.

Yep, the SLS was in the $120-150k range 12-18 months ago. Now they trade in the $150-180k range. Many, many people have observed this trend...so for folks (not you, Chedman) to jump on here and say that the SLS is not a collectible is just ignoring reality.

Agreed. When I first drove the SLS I did so back to back with a California and a Gallardo on a track in NJ. 3 laps each car. I remember how blown away I was with the SLS. Fast forward a few years and I still bought my Cali first, then the SLS. I drove them back to back again last week. The Ferrari is nowhere near as good. Both front engine, RWD v8's - one is a monster (the SLS) and one is much more subtle. The MSRP on the Cali was $249k, the SLS $189k. Both have less than 9k on them. One is a 2012 the other is a 2011. If I had to pick it would be the SLS hands down. MB made a hell of a car.

Thanks all for answering my questions.

I came to the conclusion that I will get a final edition. I really like the interior and I want something that's a little different, I.e. CF hood and spoiler, diamond pattern inside. BTW, I called on a black series but don't want to spend that much. I think the final edition will fit the bill.

I hope to locate one soon and join you guys for a ride, in SoCal.

Can't wait. Thanks.

Now that's stepping up! Way up. Good luck in the search. I hope my MB GM's can help you find one in their client base.

Look forward to meeting. I am checking on a great venue for a SLS concours d'elegance type event tomorrow.

Only 27 cars now on cars.com (USA) first time in the twenties. There were 79 when I started looking a year and a half ago...
