I found this in the interactive online owners manual.

Premium-grade unleaded petrol with an octane rating of 95 RON/85 MON may be used as a temporary measure

Pump RON is 93 here in Florida. I hear in Calif. there is only 91. This seems really strange. A difference in European RON measurements?

What do you guys use?

Yesterday, I added some fuel and remembered that the fuel grade is on the inside of the fuel door. 91 octane minimum. Duhhhhh

I can tell you that when I drove my SLS BS from Chicago to Vegas last fall somewhere in rural OK I got low on gas, stopped at the next exit and they only had 87 octane fuel. Proceeded to the next exit and dangerously low on fuel pulled into the station to once again only find 87 octane. Left with really no other option I put about 5 gallons in my tank. Literally not even 5 miles down the road I got a check engine light. I eventually found a station with 91 and filled it up. About 300 miles and a fill up later the CEL turned itself off.

How did the car run on 87 octane?

I did not hear any audible pinging. I drove the car easy and did not push it once the check engine light came on. I am sure the computer retards everything to protect against detonation.

Yes there is a difference in US vs European measurements. I'm pretty sure of that.

As for me in the US, I use non-ethanol 91. The non-ethanol makes a notable difference to me.
