Sir, it seems that you have some SMC in your trunk

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
is a real eye-catcher: it features a
trunk lid made of SMC developed by
AMG in cooperation with POLYTEC
COMPOSITES GERMANY.
AMG was certain of one thing from
the offset: the trunk lid of the new
silver arrow from Mercedes-Benz was
to be made from SMC. Indeed, this
thermoset plastic affords countless
advantages. Online paint properties
at high drying temperatures, a class
A surface, dimensional consistency,
high damage tolerance, low weight
and diverse shaping options make it a
popular option among designers. For
where else does design freedom take
centre stage than in development of
a stylish sports vehicle? A further key
deciding factor for SMC is this plastic‘s
antenna permeability.
All antenna functions can be integrated
into a double-layered trunk lid that is
invisible from the outside – and that
without the telephone, radio station,
navigation system or television signal
reception being impacted in any way.
Visually-unappealing antennae on
the fender, trunk lid, roof or back
windscreen are therefore no longer
required. And what’s more, this may
be achieved at good-value conditions:
the investment costs for production
of SMC trunk lids are significantly
lower than for those made of steel
or aluminium. This makes
the material particularly
interesting for cars in the
middle niche segment.
Based on the AMG design specifications,
POLYTEC COMPOSITES GERMANY
used its long-standing experience in
the development and manufacture
of SMC and the resulting moulded
parts. This technique has been used
for the trunk lid of the Mercedes-Benz
Cabrio, S-class Coupe, Maybach and
VW EOS.
Tests for achievement of the optimal
trunk volume led to development of
a trunk lid inner shell made of SMC,
which lends the entire trunk lid system
high torque stability despite its
extremely flat design. This could be
achieved through a series of finite
element calculations for static and
dynamic forces.
A further ambitious development goal
within the scope of product design
was an optimal symbiosis between
lightweight construction and function
integration. With low-density SMC
(LD SMC), a particularly light, reduced
density SMC formula was used for
the trunk lid‘s outer shell, which was
developed by POLYTEC COMPOSITES
GERMANY. The trunk lid was to open
fully at the touch of a remote control,
as if by magic. Weight played
a key role in
this. At the same time, emphasis
was placed on low emission levels
in materials development for the
sake of the environment.
Following joint design and process
FMEAs (failure mode and effect
analysis), a sporty vehicle with Coupé
and Cabrio models was developed,
which were unparalleled on the
market. With development of the
SMC trunk lid and SMC materials,
POLYTEC COMPOSITES GERMANY
was able to give important stimulus
in this outstanding project.
