SLS/R197/C197 AMG: Totalled my SLS roadster
On the way back home I hit a pyramidal shaped piece of concrete that had broken loose from the road. It was maybe 8 inches high. It emerged from beneath the box truck ahead of me with no time to react. It made an awful grinding sound as I slowed down and pulled off. The low engine oil warning came on as I was pulling over. The oil from the car and remains of the concrete chunk can be seen in the second picture below.
It took about 2 hours for the flat bed to come to take in to the dealership. Their estimate was 130K to fix, not counting replacing the front frame which they couldn't do. So it was totalled.
The original offer from State Farm was low. The "appraiser" marked everything in average condition for a 12 year old car which meant that it was scratched and dented and the interior torn etc, none of which was true. They deducted value for the lack of bucket seats and other details that were all standard equipment. So I pointed out to State Farm that the appraisal was a fabrication and listed the errors. They went back out and took pictures of the car and came back with a reasonable offer, that I accepted. They paid me the value of the car and the sales tax. I paid 124K in December of 2023 and that's what they gave me. So I was out the sales tax from the original purchase. It had 16K miles when I bought it and 26K when it died. I bought it to drive luckily and had a lot of fun driving it.
If you need parts it's at the Milwaukee Copart, I signed over the title yesterday.
