Like with modern AMGs, it doesn't automatically upshift in M. It does if you don't put it in M and just start using the shift paddles. This is referred to as the temporary manual mode, but if you put it in M, that's the permanent manual mode and you have to upshift yourself or it will run into the rev limiter and cut off the fuel supply to prevent overrevving. You can technically still overrev the engine by going downhill in too low of a gear while the car is gaining speed, but otherwise just like with a true manual transmission, you can't overrev it just via the throttle. It automatically downshifts however if you let the revs drop too low, to prevent engine stall.
