smart roadster-coupé
This car is very cool, particularly in its far prettier "pure roadster" form.
The idea is simple: produce a great handling, cool-looking car with good performance for a great price. This was the formula in the old days for sports cars: light weight, good fuel economy, decent speed and excellent roadholding.
The smart roadster is the Austin-Healey Sprite of this decade.
It's a pretty "smart" idea if you ask me.
I hope to see these for sale in Canada in about a year, along with the other smarts.

The REAL smart roadster
The image at the beginning of this thread is of the smart roadster-coupé, which is ungainly-looking compared to the roadster.
Here is a front 3/4 shot of the smart roadster:

smart roadster, take 2
And now for a shot of the roadster (blue) and roadster-coupé (silver) in the same frame. This allows you to see the **** end of the roadster, which to my eyes is quite nice.

They really should release it to North America, it would be a huge seller.

smart in North America?
Well, M-B Canada is close to promising to bring the smart here as soon as 2003, so if they follow through, we'll be able to buy these Roadsters in a year or two. I drove a couple of smarts on Vancouver Island in July; they were doing a tour of MB dealers in Canada to gauge public interest. Suffice it to say the interest is HUGE!

What's the big deal about this Smart Roadster? HP, aeridynamics, handling, what? I read it should have great handling, but is that it?
IMO it is on the ugly side, and it depende on the color, the black one with out the top look OK.

roadster
There's nothing really special about it, other than the fact it's very cheap for a convertible (about $13-14 K US), very compact and fits two very tall people. It's like an old-style sports car, before most of them got twin turbo 300 HP engines and became obese. That's got to be worth something these days.
Basic sports car - nothing wrong with that.
Oh, and it will AVERAGE 43 MPG (US)...that's NOT a highway figure - it's combined.
I like the looks of the roadster (the blue one), others won't. That's OK, wouldn't life be boring if everyone had the same taste?
