Smart Car coming to the US!
The smart car will be here in 2008. Expect 13K for the Pure model and 16k for the Passion. There will also be a convertable verison available. Right now only the 4x2 model, no roadster

I first saw this in Montvale, NJ (sound familiar?) back in Sept 2004.
And that's from a thread, posted in 2004 that touted that the Smart would be here in 2006.

the pricing info comes directly from the franchise manual I have seen.
As for the roadster, I dont doubt that there are some around but they are converted imports. A small dealer in my neighborhood is selling converted FourTwo's for 30k a pop. Id like a roadster but im not gona pay twice sticker for it.
Edit: Nice pics of the cab, that looks like the new model. Cant wait for them to get here. Somthing cool I saw on the US smart site said that you can buy extra colored panels for the smart and pop them off and on @ home. A color for every day of the week

I know you guys are going to want to have me shot but... I'm sorry but I think the Smart car is the worst looking piece of .... that was ever made by MBZ. I think it belongs on a golf course, not a public street....

It is an interesting quirky car that is actually alot of fun to drive. I get more attention in the smart than any other car I have owned. I drive down the street with kids and camerphones clicking away.. a trip to starbucks takes an extra 20 minutes because everyone wants to talk. nobody at a stoplight wants to be behind you because they think you will be slow, but in reality the car gets up and moves. i have one decaled and i am going to make a FAQ sticker for the back because everyone asks the following:
1. what is it
2. where did you get it
3. how much did you pay
4.. is it electric
5. can i take a picture
my website went from from 40,000 hits per month to 90,000 hits per month when I first got the smarts and decaled one of them. as wrong as this sounds, since i am a married father of three, but if i ever wanted to get laid, i would drive the smart car every day...its the car that comes with a social life

That must have been my friend in the brilliant silver roadie. He lives in HB.

Smart Cars Are Already Here
Hi Guys,
I took these pictures last July 22, 2006 in Baldwin Park, CA I just happened on to this car carrier as it cut in front of me and pulled into a gas station.
I spoke to the driver and he had just picked them up at the docks and was delivering them to a warehouse in Santa Ana, CA. I believe they belong to Roger Penske but I do not know that for sure.
Take Care

The Smarts in the Pics are Going to G and K to be converted to meet US EPA/DOT specs..They are NOT The Updated Smarts to Sold by UAG aka Penske
I Saw a New Style Smart on the 710 freeway its a Lot better looking than the Old gen Smart for two.
Headlights have a seperate for light and the door handles are No Longer Vertical
Btw the driver has some big ***** look at the clearance at the gas station

Hi Mark,
I don't know much about the Smarts. You is da man with the "smarts" about the Smarts.
I just thought they looked pretty cool on that car carrier. I think it carried about 14 of them. I agree the clearance under the roof looked to be about 6" in real life.
P.S. I still won't sell you my 500E.

These must be the old style then?
doesn't mentioned that it needed to be converted but ...

it appears that this dealer has more than just one and its a 2006 model?
I did see one around the NW 'burbs of Chicago last year but it had euro plates on it.
At $15K or less would make a decent city commuter but not at $10K over list??? I did read somewhere were smart will sponsor a number of driver clinics when it gets closer to the "actual" launch date

If you at all serious about buying a Smart I would wait untill spring/summer of 2008. I checked out some of the convered models they have at a little import dealer by my house. They have welded the sunroofs shut and install a plate over it in order to comply to US saftey standards...

I want one, but....
I will believe it when I see it, as far as these being imported on the Diamler-Chrysler dime. Kudos to those who are proactive and are driving them now. I would have one myself if they had been an option just after my (actually the other guy's poor judgement) accident in my GTI. But after a collision at 45+ (was travelling 60) and the amount of damage sustained to my car (totalled) I was hesitant to buy a small/er/ish car. I love microcars, but I do want some real estate between me and the front bumper. I have seen the test photos of the Smart and it's very impressive considering its size.
I would really love to drive one of these. I would especially love one of the EV versions considering the have (I think) a 90 mile range. It's precicely what I would want in a congested city.
Presently, I live in the open desert. I would be afraid when driving a Smart for some chowderhead to come up behind me in one of these well in excess of the speed limit:

Since when did SUV start meaning "Onroad Intimidation Vehicle"???

2008 Porsche 997 C4S Cabriolet
FWIW, I just put down my $99 deposit on-line for a Cabrio on the Smart USA website. They say pricing should start under $17k for the Cabrio so I'm hoping with a few options it will come in under $20k. Not sure what I'm getting into here but just curious more than anything.

Latest Info
FYI, here's the latest information I got via e-mail today:
"Dear Joseph,
Thank you for reserving your 2008 smart fortwo. We appreciate your enthusiasm for this very special car that is functional, innovative, fun to drive, and simply puts a smile on your face!
We are currently building our dealership network in anticipation of the smart USA vehicle introduction targeted for the first quarter 2008. Your reservation information will be sent to the smart dealer designated for your area. During the second half of 2007, that dealer will contact you directly to formalize your order, work out the details of your purchase agreement and arrange for delivery. Please be sure to keep a copy of your official confirmation certificate with your reservation for reference. Should you have any questions, please call 1-800-smart-USA.
The smart USA team will continue to send you monthly updates on the smart fortwo, including information on vehicle features and accessories, the dealer network, and the US Road Show. Be sure to follow the tour map that we will post in late spring to our website. When the Road Show stops in your city, you will be invited to attend exclusive information sessions and test drives of the new fortwo. It will be an exciting chance to get up close and personal with the new fortwo.
Again, we appreciate your continued excitement for the smart fortwo. Please share the news about our Reservation Program with your family and friends so they also can be a part of this “smart” experience.
Sincerely,
Roger S. Penske
Chairman, smart USA"

Saw my first (convertible) Smart Car today in Marina del Rey, CA. Took two pics of it with my camera phone. I didn't think it was going to hit the US till 2008, but I guess this thread proves otherwise. Notice the three pointed star on the front. Speedometer topped out at 80 mph.
