Canadian smart cdi price
Mercedes-Benz Canada is saying on their smart website that the "pure" model smart cdi (direct injection turbo-diesel) will cost $16K CDN in hardtop form and "under $20K CDN" in cabrio form. That's about $11,700 US for the hardtop and $14,500 US for the cabrio.
The Canadian "pure" trim level cars will come with at least four pieces of equipment that are optional in Europe as standard:
1) side airbags
2) daytime running lights/light package
3) Tirefit
4) Radio/CD player.
In Europe these items carry a combined cost of 700 euros ($1127 CDN, $825 US).
There is a bit of confusion at the moment as to whether air conditioning will be standard across the range or not. Some of the preliminary info from M-B Canada says it will be, while some other information says the opposite.
The final prices of the cars and options should be officially announced shortly, because ordering is supposed to be possible before July, according to some reports.
A fully-loaded convertible should cost about $24,500 CDN ($17,800 US), with leather, wide wheels, paddle shifters, etc.
These prices are comparable to the European smart fortwo cdi pricing without VAT. I had been hoping that they'd be a little more aggressive on price but these still are pretty cheap cars. It's kind of hard to be generous when the Euro is so high I suppose.
We're going to get the "passion" specification, which includes A/C (assuming it is not standard across the range), leather wheel and shift knob, alloy wheels, headliner for the top, lockable drawer under the seat, trunk divider, silver Tridion frame and more. In Europe this costs about $2300 CDN ($1700 US). Seems to be pretty good value, if it includes A/C. Of course, if A/C is standard in Canada then the price of this package over here should be about $900 less.
