Cool Park your Smart smart

Another interesting thing about the Smart is this:

took this picture yesterday out of my office window...because you don't see that very often. It is not allowed here to share parking space! Only some cities have special Smart parking lots. How about in the U.S.?

Greetings
André

parking in USA

Unfortunately the USA is not getting "official" smarts until the ForMore SUV with a gas V-6 is introduced in 2006. The UR-smart will never be sold there, so they say.

Hi André

Luckily for me I am in Canada

Whether the Canadian fortwo cdi can be imported to the USA and registered there I don't know. I think there would be some problems with that, because our national standards are different. For example, US standards require that the car protect an unbelted driver/passenger and CDN standards do not. The smart has no US-type passive restraints (e.g.knee bolsters, which are dangerous BTW).

But Mercedes-Benz Canada will be taking many steps to prevent Canadian market smart cars from being exported to the USA. Notable among these measures will be a "no export" contract (for 1 or 2 years) signed by the original owner at the time of delivery. No signature, no car.

puh, that's hard. But are Canadians allowed to enter the U.S with their little Samrts?

I think the Smart is much more safer than most of the big SUV's that you have there driving around...

visitors

Yes, any car can enter the USA with a visitor for several months.

My wife and I might even drive to Mexico in our smart next year.

The problem for Americans wanting a smart is that they can't buy one from a tourist and then register it in their state.

crash performance

The smart uses the other car's crush space to dissipate energy. so while the smart remains intact in a collision (relatively speaking) the other (larger) car will come off looking a lot worse. This is normal, the smart is designed to do that. A smart is safer than a W202 C-Class (www.euroncap.com).

That would probably hurt, but the likelihood of driving into a concrete wall at speed is zero unless one is an idiot. I wouldn't want to do that in any car. The smart does have a deformable crash box, but it's clapped out at 15 km/h. After that the wheels absorb shock and transmit it into a lateral beam. The car can absorb reasoable hits against non-deformable barriers, but not at as high a speed as a large car. Good thing the smart is slower

The bottom line for me.

I have seen lots of collisions, where the occupants of the big car call a cab and go home. The occupants of the small car go to the morgue.

But they were saving gas!

crash

Well if you're that sensitive to crash performace you should unload your four-star EuroNCAP car and buy a Renault Laguna, which gets five stars! Too bad the Renault (first car to get five EuroNCAP stars BTW) is not sold in Canada...

Public transport (any form) is FAR safer than travel in ANY car.

Or better still, get a semi tractor unit, king of the road in collisions! POS to drive, far more likely than a smart to get into a collision in the first place, but what the hell, if you're going to crash, do it in style!

The smart has huge integrity for such a small car and I have no qualms about driving one at all.

What do you do (or how/where do you drive) that you see so many collisions like that?

Also, don't tag smart with the Kia/Yugo/Suzuki Swift folding pop can image, because they're nothing like that.

If you had seen smart drivers being wheeled off to the morgue after a fender bender with a Lincoln then I'd pay more attention to your comment

Angry not so smart?

Mike T:
This is the thing, you never know how much expertise anyone has on the internet. Yes I have seen a lot of accidents. I worked 30 years with the Vancouver police, 10 years of that in the traffic division. I have seen a lot of dead motorists.
Mind you I don't hold myself out as a mental health poster boy after riding Harley for ten years. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than "Smart".
Cheers

Barry, just curious from your experience, what car do you think is safest, if price is not an issue?

I heard there are lots of accidents in Vancouver as it's too easy to get a licence there?

Probably true, as in many hundreds of cases, people BOUGHT their license from a certain driving school/crooked examiner where the first language was not English....

smart answer

Mike T: has the right idea, in- that safe drivers make safe cars.

The captain of the Titanic managed to drown 1200 people in the un-sinkable safest ship in the world. His ego demanded that he make the world record fastest crossing,so...

I am putting my chips on the w140 S class so thats my bet.

With hundreds of models of cars and different testing methods, who can realy know for sure?

ciao

Barry

Thumbs down Not a very smart crooked examiner.

We should have the examiner do community work retraining those who bought licenses from him/her.

I wish the smart fortwo cabrio came in Citron but it doesn't, so we have to settle for "stream green". It's kind of a light limey green-yellow, not metallic though.
