Angry I got SCAMMED on here!

Really should consider having some sort of escrow service available on here so members don't get scammed, tried buying from 1MBsleeper and figured it was reasonable to pay half up front and half after delivery and never got the product or any messages after sending the first payment....Need to make it safer for people to purchase products on here. I did report the individual to the government scams thing suggested by my credit union.

Sorry to hear it. The only consolation is, guys like that eventually run out of people to rip off, and eventually will suffer for their degeneracy. Sometimes a lot sooner.

Never pay cash/check or by CC with an unknown seller. If you paid cash/check, you're SOL. If by CC or Paypal, you have dispute recourse. Scamming has become so common, that even supposedly legitimate companies are finding ways to cheat customers with misrepresented products and refund/return policies. They make getting your money back more trouble than it's worth.

I appreciate the kind words, I bet I could guess who you voted for. I've bought and sold over a dozen items from different forums and never had this type of outcome so I can assure you I took the proper precautions. But anyways thanks for the kind words!

You try to blame the forum and put ownership or liability there? Ignorant. That is a fact.

You remind of this guy on the corvette forums that thought his ZR1 was worth 3x what the market dictated. Your name isn't Bob by chance is it? Any who I was just suggesting it would be nice to have some sort of escrow integration so it was easier to buy/sell things through the forums. In some sense your response sort of makes it ok for someone to hack into the forum and steal your data because you knew the risk of using the forum (which by the way is incredibly easy to do) and the forum shouldn't be a safe place. Anyways I understand your rationale but at the same time what would be the downside to having some sort of integration that protects buyers/sellers? And like I previously mentioned I've bought and sold a ton of items from the forums and never had an issue and yes it is on me that the forum doesn't use kyc.

Hey Old Man go easy, not every one is as smart as you are. We all make mistakes and OP's post wasn't about blaming the forum either. All he meant was, some sort of Escrow services that's all.

Has anyone dealt with the forum member that op mentions?

op, as a note to your future self, anyone should be asking for full payment upfront and be willing to have both sides protected in the transaction. If anyone ever asks for a partial payment, they’re just looking to scam you for the partial. Good sellers if you are meeting them in person will always be willing to work on a handshake, and bad sellers or scammers want you to pay before you’ve ever seen it. For far away sellers, make sure you get a validated picture similar to what the kidnapper might have to do. Ask them for a very specific picture so you know that they are taking it. I’ve sometimes asked for them to take a picture with an upside down peace sign. When they won’t validate, I won’t buy. Once validated, if it’s going to be a pickup, a nominal deposit is offered, which the good seller will reject and work off just the handshake. Additionally, come to the forums and ask about these people because most of us are here to help.

If I ran a forum (i dont)....never ever would I use the forum to facilitate transactions and barters for forum members. I also would not ask a forum to protect me in any way for a fiduciary transaction. That is what PayPal and other options are for. A forum is for communication, not protection from scammers. Heck, the list of scammer accounts is IMO more than we could ask for.

At best, maybe the forum admins could get an IP (it would be VPN or Dyn). Then the police would say 'there is nothing we can do....' if and when a police report is filed.

The marketplace here offers an opportunity for members to connect. Adding any 3rd party services adds liabilities, risks and costs. Instead members need to practice common sense as on any financial transaction.

Please be aware that there are spammers/scammers that are trying to impersonate legitimate sellers by creating new user accounts that are nearly identical (either slightly misspelled or with an added comma or period in the name). Those posts (or private messages) usually contain email addresses or phone numbers. Never respond to those and report them. They are obvious as the user is listed as a Newbie and usually only has a single post.

Appreciate the feedback, apparently you can just search the phone number sometimes and see if it comes up as scam. One forum actually has a list of all the scam email and phone numbers they've seen which will also help as well
