FS: W124 Sportline steering box 300E 300D E320
This is a W124 6-cylinder Sportline steering box from a 1992 300E Sportline sedan. It will fit all W124's except 4Matics or models with V8 engines (again, this box will NOT work on a 400E/500E). The sedan & cabriolet Sportline steering box had the fastest ratio available from the factory on the W124. The coupes had slower steering boxes than the sedans, so the coupe "Sportline" steering box was actually just the plain sedan steering box! Therefore, this gearbox has a greater increase in ratio (and fewer turns lock-to-lock) when installeded on a coupe. Total turns lock-to-lock when installed in the car is about 3.0 turns. Here are the ratio specs from the factory manual:
Ratio 14.6-16.1 = Coupe standard box
Ratio 13.9-15.3 = Sedan & cabrio standard box, coupe Sportline
Ratio 13.3-14.6 = Sedan & cabrio Sportline box (<-- this is what I'm selling)
This is a used gearbox that I have not tested, as I never installed it in my car. It was a spare unit for my '93 300D, however I sold the car and don't need the spare. What you see in the photos below is what you get. It appears to be dry and leak-free but I cannot guarantee that, you may wish to replace the pitman arm shaft seal prior to installation since it's cheap & easy while the box is on the workbench.
Genuine Sportline sedan steering boxes are rare, and VERY difficult to locate! The factory part number is 124-460-71-01 and it is not shown in the USA EPC, only the Euro EPC. List price in Europe as of a few years ago was approx $1650 EUR / $2200 USD. I do not know if any are still available in Germany.
$525, free shipping in the USA. PayPal ok. International shipping will be approx $100 USD due to the weight.
