2007 Wagon
Question 4Matic Growling Noise in Drive Train

I have 2007 E320 Wagon with 85,000 miles. I get a noise when driving on freeway that to me sounds like a wheel bearing going bad , but wheel bearings are ok. So checking drive train. I get a clunk when going from drive to reverse back and forth. Got on lift and removed shield and universals seem ok, but the loud clunk seems to be coming from the transfer case. I really don’t want to hand it over to the Mercedes ‘stealership’. Any ideas on best next move to determine what problem is? I am capable of removing the transfer case if necessary, but short of just buying a new one, used one or attempt rebuild myself, (which I’m not sure I am up to), any thoughts?

Try posting the question in the W211 or W212 section. Failed t-case at high mileage is not unknown.
