This past Friday, my wife had to make a 4 hour drive to visit her mother, she stopped at the local Mercedes Benz dealer to have a pre-check safety inspection done before her trip. Two hours into her trip she noticed a white smoke behind her, but thought it was from the tractor trailer in front of her, she then pulled into a rest stop to use the restroom and as soon as she parked the engine compartment burst into flames. The car burnt to the ground, so will be very difficult to determine the cause, but the state trooper felt as if they may have left off the oil cap. Mercedes says they did not and they said they video everything. They feel that what they did would not have caused this fire. The car only had 58k miles an dnever had a problem, no warning lights were on. To me it seems as if this was caused by some type of oil leak based on the white smoke and the instant combustion when she parked. Any advice on what caused this?
