Every E-Class (W211) & CLS-Class (C219) instrument cluster can be coded via Star Diagnose (STAR) to do frequency (all stations) or presets searches. Due a to programming flaw in the instrument cluster (IC) and/or communications platform (CP) even when presets are chosen within this menu the system continues to scan frequency only.
For whatever reason(s) since the inception of the W211, DaimlerChrysler/Mercedes-Benz (DC/MB) has been unable (or unwilling) to correct this malfunction. DC/MB claims that all ‘07 models will have a modified IC capable of scanning presets. So the previous E-Class (W210) owners have the ability to scan presets and the ‘07 W211 & C219 owners will also have this ability. Only ‘03 through ‘06 W211 and ‘06 C219 owners are left to do without.

Please note:
(a) DC/MB Operations Manager has admitted in writing that DC/MB considers a safety matter in that they do not want their customers to take their eyes off the road to change preset radio stations.
(b) DC/MB does not consider this a malfunction but in reality the frequency and presets settings within the IC both only scan frequency - a malfunction.
(c) DC/MB denied MBUSA customers in response to a J.D. Power and Associates survey "Radio won't stay on station and poor reception" whereby Europeans preferred scanning the strongest stations while traveling.
(d) DC/MB Vice President has admitted in writing that “Indeed it is not very difficult to reprogram instrument clusters like other electronic devices too”.
(e) MBUSA issued TSB P-B-82.95/251a JUL03 - Intermittent IC Display “TeleAid Defective: Visit Workshop” correcting a software conflict between the IC & CP.
(f) DC/MB claims the 2007 IC is not compatible with previous models and therefore cannot be retrofitted.
(g) Unfortunately NHTSA does not consider radios that do not operate properly a safety related defect. http://www.safercar.gov/pages/ODIFAQsRev2.htm (Question #6)
Which would you opt for as acceptable retribution from MBUSA for not being able to scan your preset radio stations from your steering wheel controls?
(1) Correct the software conflict by releasing a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB)
(2) Offer a reasonable monetary allowance to apply towards the purchase of a ‘07 model
(3) Offer a reasonable monetary allowance to apply towards installing Linguatronic (with or without phone) to circumvent software patch
(4) Offer cash settlement without restriction
(5) Insignificant
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
