Improving transportation infrastructure for attracting more visitors

Tourists require the fastest and the best means of transport in order to visit the different tourist centers throughout the country. It is a primary service needed by the tourists in order to reach their destination of choice within short notice. The passenger transport may be categorized as public or private, inland or international, air or surface etc.

In Kerala beach tourism has not got its due mainly due to the lack of transportation facilities along the 600 km long coastal stretch. If the beaches of Kerala would have been properly mapped and developed as major tourist centers, this state would have rivaled the beaches of present day Goa.

The one and only beach destination that has caught the attention of the outside world is the world famous Kovalam beach located about 12 Km away from the capital city, Trivandrum. Kovalam has unique advantages and other natural features, which has led to its popularity. The shallow sea is surrounded by high cliffs in a U-shape making it safe for swimming and other water sports.

Even in modern times, the government and even the tourism authorities have done precious little to properly survey the various Kovalam type beaches in the state. It is interesting to note that scores of such places exist all over the state. While the question of unspoilt beaches and other places suited for beach tourism have received scant attention, the issue of uninhabited islands is another aspect that requires serious consideration of the planning authorities.

The lack of a vision plan to develop the existing places of tourist interest and to develop newer areas with tourism potential is acting as a dampener. Taking a leaf out of the approaches taken by the tourism planners in the developed countries and also in Australia will certainly help the planning members to produce results within a short period of time. Even though the city of paris is host to more than 6 million visitors in a year, the French authorities are still developing newer natural and artificial amusements to attract even more visitors.
