Unhappy V Class Stearing Lock knackered or not ?

The key takes the stearing lock off but will not turn any more. So no lights on dash or engine start. It has an auto box and is in "P". I have had problems with the auto gear cable before not putting the box in the correct gear postion ie "P" or "N" so not allowing the engine to start, but ok this time. Has it a failed sensor and if so what is it called and where would it be found. Any ideas ?? Happy New Year 2006
