Mercedes want to put in a new engine due to bad fuel

Hi guys, hopefully I'm posting in the right forum.

my buddy has a decked out 2016 Sprinter for work and a couple of months back the motor cut out on the highway. He took it to Mercedes who have had it for two months and now say he needs a new engine due to bad fuel. I would imagine if he had bad fuel, he'd potentially need a new fuel pump, flushed lines, fuel filter, and injectors and maybe cleaning of valves or pistions. I'm waiting to see the MB report but as far as I know he didn't lose a rod or burn a piston. I know Mercedes often wants to replace a motor rather than fix it. Anyone feel this is probably the case or am I underestimating the impact of bad fuel ? Its Diesel and I know the injectors can get blocked, but I thought it hard to kill a diesel...
