LED Bars For Outside Temperature and Clock/Gear Dislplay Is Missing Bars!!

[SIZE=4]I just joined this form this morning because I purchased a silver 2001 E55 last Wednesday with 54k miles. I purchased it with the outdoor temperature display missing a few LED bars, but now my clock and gear display has the same issue. Does anyone know what the problem is or how to correct this? Other than that, the car is mint.

Anyone have any luck removing the instrument cluster and replacing bulbs/cleaning the connectors? Just doesn't seem to make alot of sense to spend $1000 for a new cluster just to see the time and temperature.

I have the same problem with my 2001 E55. I've been searching around a bit, and some people had luck with removing the cluster and cleaning the contact plates to the clock and temperature displays. The problem seems to be oxidation of these contact plates in the 2000+ AMG clusters. Recommended cleaning agents I've seen is CRC Oxide Clean, CRC Contact Protect and Air Duster PFR 4-44.

Will try this myself soon and report any success, but thought I'd share my knowledge so far if anyone else wants to give it a try.

Good luck

Thanks. A friend of mine put me on to a company that repairs them. You have to send it to them though. Here is a cut and paste from my email from the company. Also, I contacted my MB dealer and they said they DO NOT fix the LED's and I would have to replace the entire instrument cluster......costing a whopping $1,050....and that's not including labor/reprogramming the unit. I searched the net in regards to the "common problem" and you wouldn't believe how many people out there have the same issue. MB should list this as a recall. Its obvious that this is a quality issue that has some people paying well over a thousand bucks to repair. Anyway, I am venting....here's the cut and paste. I am sending my unit off in a few weeks. I just got the car last week and still on a horse power high....... :-)

I have a 2001 Mercedes E55 AMG and the clock/gear display and the tempertaure display has some missing LED bars. Mercedes will not fix this problem and a new cluster costs over a thousand bucks. Do you have any experience in fixing this problem on a 01 E55 AMG? This is a very common problem with MB vehicles.

Mr. Johnson,
We can repair these instrument clusters. You will have to send your unit in for repair and the turn around time is approximately 2 days. The cost is $385.00 total with a 12 month / 12,000 mile warranty including ground freight. Please give us a call if you have any questions.

I hope this helps those with the LED bar issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
