Rev limiter question, is this normal

I have a 2002 e55 that screams right up to redline anytime I want.....
But while in "park" it only revs to about 3500- 4000 rpms then it feel like the spark and or fuel gets cut off.

Is this normal?

Yes, that's completely normal! Designed to protect the engine from being revved too high when it's not loaded.

The thing is, I have no idea why revving an unloaded engine (high) is bad for it. Can someone explain?

Because it generates a *****load of heat, without the proper airflow to cool it down. Is there really a reason to redline a car while in park?

I just overheated and fried the powersteering pump on a car like that this past week while brake-torqueing it at redline (no airflow) for a little video shoot. Good thing it's under warranty though.
