Intake restriction?!!

Intake restriction?!!
2000 E55 here. Why is the passenger side intake inlet restricted be the grille, but not on the drivers side? I will post pics when I get a chance. Is everyoned E55 like this.

I don't know why the left side is restricted, and I think all of them are like that. i think I'm going to go to the track tomorrow night and test the car with the grill and with out it. just to see if it does affect performance, I don't think it affects it, but I hope it does.
