Question engine problem, anyone familiar?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with a problem I've been having recently with my 99 e55 (40k miles)...

The car pulls as usual to about 4500 rpm, then suddenly power drops off considerably, from 4500 up to the shift point it feels almost like a rev limiter has kicked in part way... a sudden loss of power, feels like an e320 from 4500 - 6000 rpm... low end response seems to be okay...

i'm planning to take it into the dealer to see what they think but thought I might ask you folks if you've heard of this problem before?

the only thing i can think of is recently my battery died (left the lights on) and i had it replaced.. i don't drive the car too often so it was dead for several days... Ever since it came back on I've had this problem so at first i thought maybe the ECU is relearning, but now think it may be mechanical...

thanks to anyone with any thoughts on this matter!

Could be the mass airflow sensor. A common problem for our cars. I have just had mine replaced.
