What is a Direct-injection engine?

it's an engine where the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders, instead of into the intake manifold. Only air passes through the valves.
Diesels do this, but the new MB engines are the first (I think) to incorporate the technology into a production gasoline engine.
I imagine it allows more precise control of the combustion.

Mercedes first made direct injection gasoline engines for it's race cars and produced the first mass production four stroke direct injection gasoline engine for the 300SL back in 1954.
Besides Mercedes I know both Mitsubishi and Renault are currently producing GDI engines as well.

and the VolksWagen Group:
they call it FSI, its avalible in the VW Golf and the Audi A4 2.0, more engines are coming.
the Audi Le-Mans Racecars (i thinks they are called R8R) use it also.
