For those who have the cluster issue dealers will charge up to $1,300 to fix it. Well...There is a company called BBA manufacturing see site:
www.bba-reman.com
They will charge you $225 to fix it!!!
My mechanic removed the cluster for me, I sent them my unit...4 days later I got it back working like new! Great people to deal with and great job.
Spread the word!

That's great news to know on the instrument cluster. Mine's perfect right now, but I know many MBs have all experienced that. I think the S-class even has that on an official recall.
Speaking of instrument cluster, we just got my wife a 2002 BMW 540i (after failing to persuade her that for the same money the E55's better). Mechanically the car is in very good condition, but the instrument cluster is a mess...and you have to guess at most of the information on therer. Furthermore, I have 8 more months on extended svc, but it specifically does not cover that item.
The good news is that after spending some time researching this topic on roadfly.org, I found out that BMW's cluster is equally unreliable. The main difference, however, is that instead of paying $1200 at the BMW dealer...it's openly discussed in the forum that BMW NA will pay for the part and the owner pays the dealer 1 hr labor. The offical word is that BMW will consider each situation case by case, but I've heard enough stories to think that everyone who submits has gotten it approved...even if it's 3rd owner and over 100k miles. Geez...wouldn't it be nice if MB would do the same?

BMW NA, while vastly inferior to Lexus NA, is 10x better in customer service than MB USA.
Make a new thread about your cluster problem on roadfly, and most likely a BMW NA rep will call you and tell you to go meet your local dealer SA. They'll pay for most of it.
Too bad most recent Bimmers look like A$$, but hopefully i'll go back.
